Interesting reasons for why you’re still single.

By Adelaide Kwaning

Most people are told they’re still single because they’re scared of commitment, act too desperate or are too picky, and while these may be legit reasons for being single, what if there’s more to it than just being afraid to settle?

Below are some not normally discussed reasons for why you may still be single.

You may be single because…

1. You’re too brainy: Despite staunch efforts to avoid gender stereotypes, and form gender equality, men still prefer women who are not too brainy. A study showed that a high IQ hampered a woman's chance of getting married, with a 40 per cent drop in marital prospects for every 16-point rise.
Tip: You should never feel pressured to dumb yourself down simply to attract a partner. Not to mention this study is pretty broad. There are plenty of men who want a clever woman. However, women should note that “many women in the Victorian era, when they were definitely second-class citizens, learned how to manipulate their husbands, to get their own way by making themselves indispensable and powerful.”

talk too much
2. You talk too much: If you’re one of those people who always has an “interesting” story to tell about everything from swimming lessons when you were 8 to the crazy dream you had 3 days ago it may be impeding your love life. It’s not that you’re stories entirely suck, but in most cases such people talk way more than they listen.
Tip: Learn to listen. If you really must, consider taking a class on interviewing techniques. Not only will this teach you how to carefully listen, you’ll also learn what to say and more importantly what not say.

3. You’re cheap: People don’t mind if you don’t have a lot of money, they just don’t want you to be cheap with the money you have. Nothing says “dump me” louder than whipping out your calculator on a date.
Tip: If money is an issue, then you need to get creative. You may not be able to take to your date to a fancy dinner and live show but you can rent their favorite movies and make a nice dinner—can’t cook? Order in. There are tones of things to do on a budget. One of the greatest date activities is a simple walk in the park. Also, avoid discussing your financial status on a first date. Talking about money while you’re still in the beginning stage of the dating is tacky.

friends forever 4. Your friends are your relationship coach: Friends are great, but they have an annoying way of disrupting a perfectly good relationship. Do you go to your friends whenever you have a problem with your relationships or when you want to be set up? Do you take your friends opinions to heart and only date people they approve of, or dump someone because they don’t like them? Guess what, you’re friends are keeping you single.
Tip: Naturally, we go to our friends when we want advice, but there should be a line that no friend should be able to cross when it comes to relationships.

You’re friends don’t need to hear about every detail that happens between you and your date. Also, just because you’re friends say no doesn’t mean you should too. You’re the one dating him, not your friends.

You’re friends aren’t going to approve of everyone you date; it’s your job to figure out if you want to spend more time with that person. Also, studies show that when we rely too heavily on other people’s opinion we lose the natural skill of forming our own. In other word, you ignore the obvious such as, he drinks too much.

5.You’re allergic to everything: It may not be your fault, but dating someone who sneezes or breaks out at the sight of everything can be a date breaker.
Tip: Luckily foodcoop.com is a great place to meet people with diversity, who just might suffer some of the same symptoms. It’s hotbed of hotties and vegetables. They also have organic fruits and vegetables at wholesale prices.

6. You only like people who don’t like you: I know many people like a challenge but sometimes you have to face facts, “they’re just not that into you.” If you’re someone who clearly likes being heart broken you may be single for a while.
Tip: Time to lose the haters. You’re terrific and you need to start networking with people who will like you. Try hanging out in places where you’ll meet like minded individuals.

7. You’re too pretty: You’re face is symmetrical and you smell great, what’s not to love. Trouble is people are too busy awing at your pulchritude to really get to know you.
Tip: Trying mingling with people who can’t see you. Online dating works great for those who are well, just-too-pretty. It forces people to get to know you without your beauty getting in the way. Not into the whole virtual dating scene? There are a number of clubs such as the Jivamukti Yoga School where you can meet people without seeing them. The Jivamukti Yoga School, for instance, holds blindfolded dances. Or you could stop complaining because we all wish we had your problem.

Being single can be fun. You don’t have to be with someone to be happy but if you are looking for someone and have had trouble succeeding it may be because of one of the reasons above.
