Safe home remedies for headaches

A cautionary not: If you have a serious condition or if pain persists see a physician. Only minor aches and pains should be treated at home

Steam away a sinus headache. If your face feels tight, your nose is full, and your headache seems to be enveloping your face you probably have a sinus headache. Steam or moist heat may help.

Sit in the bathroom with the shower running hot and hard. Or try a warm pack across the eyes and cheekbones. Take a facial towel and soak it in warm water. After you wring it out, apply it to the area that hurts. When it cools off warm it up and reapply for ten minuets.

A steam vaporizer can be of inestimable value when a sinus headache comes on.

Run away from headaches. According to migraine expert, Seymour Diamond, MD., you can run away from a headache. Running at least in theory increases the production of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers.

Dr Diamond thinks these natural painkillers may be responsible for the relief migraine suffers feel after jogging. For those who find running relaxing, he says it could also relieve a muscle tension headache.

The mechanics of a headache. Around 90% of all headaches are “mechanical” headaches. Mechanical headaches are headaches related to posture and its effects on joints and ligaments. Relief may be as simple as changing the way you breathe, sleep or hold your tongue.

  • Breathe through your nose rather than your mouth. You will draw more air into your lungs and you will hold your head and shoulders in a better posture. Many people use their neck and upper chest to breath. If you’re one of them try and stop. They’re not designed for that. Doing so causes soreness and pain to your and shoulders.
  • Avoid sleeping on your stomach. When you do your head is turned to one side of the jaw and upper neck, which put too much pressure on these parts causing a headache.
  • Hold your tongue lightly on the roof of your mouth, resting on the ridges of the upper palate and just behind your upper teeth. If your tongue rests in the place of your mouth, this tiny muscle can exert enough force to cause head and neck misalignments, which can lead to headaches and stiff necks. To ensure that it is the right place say “Boston” and keep your jaw as it is with your tongue just behind but not touching the upper teeth.
